Definition of Division

  • Division is an operation that tells us the number of groups that can be made out of a number of items or how many items will be in a group.
The symbol ÷ denotes division.

For example, the division number sentence 8 ÷ 2 = 4 says that there are four groups of 2’s in 8.

  • Dividend: In a division problem, the number that is to be divided is called the dividend.
In the division number sentence 8 ÷ 2 = 4, 8 is the dividend.
  • Divisor: In a division number sentece, the number that divides the dividend is called the divisor.

  • Divisible: A number is said to be divisible by another number, if in the process of division, the remainder is zero.

  • Remainder: Remainder is the number that is left over after dividing.
In the division number sentence 9 ÷ 2 = 4 R 1, 1 is the remainder as 9 is not divisible by 2.

Rita distributed 52 chocolates among 13 children. How many chocolates did each child receive?

Choices:

A. 4

B. 3

C. 13

D. 52

Correct Answer: A

Solution:

Step 1: Total number of chocolates = 52

Step 2: Total number of children = 13

Step 3: Number of chocolates received by each child = 52 ÷ 13 = 4.
